Happy World Milk Day 2022!
Let us celebrate this World Milk Day June 1, 2022 by understanding the importance of milk which contributes a major share in keeping all of us healthy and its major contribution to the dairy sector. Right from childhood to old age milk is one drink that stays constant throughout our lives no matter in what form we consume it. Nutritionists call it a complete meal because it contains all the nutrition's all our body needs!
Milk has been celebrated on the 1st of June every year for the past 21 years ever since 2001. It was established by the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO)
World Milk Day Theme for 2022.
According to FAO's official website, the theme of World Milk Day this year is to "bring attention to the climate change crisis and how the dairy sector can reduce its impact on the planet. The aim is to achieve 'Dairy Net Zero' by reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years and improving waste management in order to make the dairy sector sustainable".
I don't think it would be fair enough if we do not celebrate the animal that gives us milk during this day. With that being said, here are a few tips and tricks a milker can follow in order to keep the cow healthy and at the same time obtain pure and hygienic milk.
Steps to be taken before starting to milk
Fix a time for milking and make sure there are no frequent changes in the process. If at all any change make sure it is gradual.
Clean the milking parlor at least half an hour before milking.
Make sure the milking vessels or cans are thoroughly cleaned and dried.
Ensure the milking vessel is round in shape and without any joints.
Heating the milking vessel before milking (dry heat application) will improve the keeping quality of milk.
Preparations to be made before starting to milk a cow
Try to complete the process from washing to milking within 8 minutes.
2. Udder should be washed with lukewarm water, in which few crystals of potassium permanganate can be added. (Amount sufficient to change the colour)
3. Massage(light) the udder while washing.
4. Ensure that the person entrusted with the job of milking is aware of the importance of personal hygiene: clean hands and trimmed nails are a must.
5. Dry the udder with clean cloth from the tip of the teat upward.
6. Always ensure that milking is performed with a full hand method (Not with folded thumb), quickly, completely and comfortably ( Animal should feel comfortable). Milking should be by gentle squeezing of teats NOT by dragging or giving jerks to teats.
7. After milking dip the teats in disinfectant solutions e.g. weak iodine solution.
Other Tips & Tricks
1. Always milk animals in calm and quiet atmosphere preferably play light music (if possible)
2. Animals that have recently calved and animals giving more milk should be milked first then the animals giving less milk or in the last phase of lactation.
3. Animals with diseases or with mastitis should be milked separately at the end.
4. Animals giving up to 10 litres of milk should be milked twice a day. The frequency needs to be increased to thrice in case of production ranging from 12-15 litres.
5. Employ two persons for simultaneous milking in case the production is more than 16 liter per day.
6. Milk from animals that are ill or taking medication should not be mixed with other milk.
7. Before pouring the milk into the vessel it should be strained through a muslin cloth (four layers) or through a thin nylon mesh.
8. Cool the milk (by putting ice around the milk can) and transport it to the retail center or collection center of the cooperative society as early as possible.
9. Ensure that the water used for cleaning the utensils is clean and free from contamination.
10 Milk is a good medium for the growth of microorganisms. A single contamination may render it unfit for human consumption.
11. Low quality affects shelf life of the milk besides there may be change in flavor, taste, or nutrient composition.
12. Quality production ensures profitability as you can get premium prices for quality.
